I think the term "re-gift" could be considered a relatively new term in the American vernacular.
The action of re-gifting refers to giving someone an object that was given to the original giver either as a gift or a "freebie". To many it is a sign of a stingy or cheap gift giver, to me it is recycling. If the re-gift is fitting or can be manipulated or enhanced in any way, it is a gift just the same as a new gift. To me, gifts should not hold monetary value. A gift, and the act of giving it, should be a gesture of love or thoughtfulness, not of wealth or status.
As we rapidly approach cooler weather and the holiday season, we should all think about the sentimental value of our gifts while ignoring the monetary value. Think recycled gifts, handmade, thrift store, or trade intangible gifts like time or love.
